Tesla Motors was founded in 2002 to create electric cars that exemplify the highest standards of automotive performance, efficiency and design. SDL Ventures was the first institutional investor in Tesla. Its first product, the 100% electric Tesla Roadster sports car, is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in about four seconds. The company has delivered over 1,500 Roadsters to customers so far. Tesla also sells patented power train components to other automakers, such as Daimler Benz. The company is now focused on production engineering and assembly of its second car, the Model S all-electric family sedan The company completed a very successful IPO in June 2010.
